Overview

Web Programming and Design

At Hornsby TAFE you will receive outstanding training in web programming and design.

The course is designed for people wishing to pursue a career producing effective sites on the World Wide Web. The skills you will develop span several areas including:

  • Creating web sites using HTML and CSS
  • Client-side programming using JavaScript and jQuery
  • Server-side programming using PHP and databases using MySQL
  • Search engine optimisation (SEO)
  • Design Fundamentals
  • Adobe programs - Photoshop
  • Selecting a web host
  • Content management systems (CMS)

6 months full time (18 weeks) or 1 year part time (36 weeks - 3 nights per week)

Prerequisites

The TAFE website states students should have NSW School Certificate (or equivalent). However we run this course in 2 stages. Stage 1 is covered in our certificate 2 or 3, stage 2 assumes you have already completed stage 1

Applicants will need to have completed Certificate II in Information Technology or equivalent.

The equivalent skills include:

  • A very good knowledge of applications such as word processing, spread sheets and database
  • A good knowledge of computer hardware
  • Very good communication skills
  • Be familiar with web technology including HTML, photo, web and internet knowledge
  • Above-average typing skills.

What will I be able to do when I finish this course?

Completion of this certificate will provide you with the skills to apply for the Diploma in Web Development, or to work as a junior web designer/developer in industry.

After completing the course you will be able to design,create and maintain web sites. Including websites requiring web programming in PHP and JavaScript.You will be able to use Photoshop to design engaging layouts and create web pages in HTML and CSS based on requirements.

As well as creating functional websites you will also look at selecting web hosting and search engine optimization (SEO). The web pages created will be accessible on a range of devices including mobile devices.

This course provides highly relevant skills in the front-end and back-end of web design. You will be able to develop interactive websites using a range of methods and tools. You will be able to apply for jobs as a web designer, web developer or even run your own freelance agency.
